Brains Before Nuts

If you don't know an Ace from a King or you have played for years, this site is for you.

Five Card Draw

This is a very popular home game but not so popular in casinos. You almost never see Five Card Draw being played in a casino because the pots aren't that big and there are only 2 bet sessions. Many people were first introduced to poker with this game. Receiving some cards, throwing down the ones you don't want, and getting some more was in fact the first type of poker EVER. In this game there are blinds, or antes, and rarely both. There is no 'bring in' like seven card stud because everyone is dealt FIVE cards face down. From here there is one clockwise bet session during which you can come in accordingly. After this each player must 'discard' the cards they don't want. There is no Flop or any community cards at all. After you recieve your new cards that is the end of your hand. You may discard as many as ALL five cards or not even discard a single card. Most of the time when someone discards no cards after they have raised they have a powerful hand because ALL five of there cards are important to them. Plus this can also be used as deception since many of your opponents will think you already have a straight or a flush. After the discarding each player receives their new cards and there is one more bet session before the hands are shown.

Below are the three steps to any Five Card Draw hand.

This player started with just an Ace, discarded the other four cards and then ended up with a pair of aces. Even though this game has the least amount of bet sessions from any other poker game it still takes a great deal of still to become a consistent winner at 5 Card Draw.
